Title: Miracles at Glastonbury
Director: Kenneth Janes
Dancers/Choreographers: Jessica Fogel, Carol Hess, Martha Wiseman
Description: Directed by the Barnard College British theater professor Kenneth Janes, this choreography was created for an annual summer festival in Glastonbury, England. Janet Soares had taken dancers there in previous seasons, but in 1974, she sent just us three undergraduates out—Carol Hess, Martha Wiseman, and myself—to perform and choreograph dance interludes for the plays, which included “The Play of the Holy Grail” and “Flight Into Egypt.” The actors were from the community. From July 5-August 9, 1974 we performed several days a week in the outdoor ruined abbey of Glastonbury. Often it rained, and the audiences sat there with or without umbrellas. As a performer, I wore my full length royal blue long bathrobe, my Clark Wallabee shoes, and played my violin under an umbrella when necessary. I also choreographed and danced in the performances. I was very excited to have this international experience as a young dancer/choreographer. A letter below to my parents talks not so much about the performance experience, but about my travels throughout England during this period.
